My recommendation is that any business always face with many risks to have high profit. All of their shareholders are proud of their family business, they should move into the crisp market. However they should research about their new market clearly again because some of their information is not clear and sure. Crisp market is a oligopoly market, therefore there is a high barrier to entry. They must to have enough finance if they don’t want to have problems with their cash-flow and their loans. They will have two more workers if they want to move to crisp market. Therefore they should teach them and train another 4 workers as well. Nowadays education is the most important of life. Billions dollars is invested in education every year. People know if they don’t have good education, they won’t have good job and good life. Many investors know it is a great investment in this credit- crunch , so they try to use that profitable.
EF is one of them, but they are the oldest and longest group opened about 40 years ago. They have a lots experiences and agencies around the world. Each year, there are thousand students apply into EF ‘s courses. They have many kinds of courses, so students can choice them easily. For example, short-time they have English , exchange student, academy, foundation,…. Long-time is A-level, IB, university,… Their schools are in around the world: Oxford, Torquay, Cambridge, New York, Boston,… and hundred agencies in places which have high demand for education.
EF was opened a long time, but on the first time they only a group help students go to UK for studying and teaches English. Nowadays, their business is going up, so they have more trades. In those trades, they just a new member. They have to do a lot things to improve and competition.
They are doing many things to people know their reputation. There are advertising, discount, scholarship, hiring good teachers, building new school and residences, having good relationship with political power where they want to invest and where they are investing. I think the most important thing they can easy make more customers is have good image with their old students. They are from around the world and they tried EF ’s teaching, so they can introduce and invite their relatives and their friends to join EF program. That is free and very good way to have more customers.
Also they can have suggestion boxes which they can know their students complaints and know what bad things are happening. However, they need to solve that problem as quick as they can or non student will believe them any more.
They also invest in internet. Most of students want to have good internet to play game or search information/ new. There are many complaint EF’s wifi is slow. They can have separate wifi which students must pay and it is strong. I think many students want to have that and 5 or 10 pounds is no problem for them.
With long time courses like IB or A-level , they should help student find a suit universities and make them believe those have future. They shouldn’t think about themselves , for example only think how to increase their income as fast as they can, they should think about their students’ future. They should have close relationship with universities to help their students who want to apply to those universities. They also eliminate bad teachers to have better education environment.
My essay maybe not enough, but it is my opinion. I hope another students can comment to help it better. Thanks

Celton has a population of 7000 and an unemployment rate of 11 %. It isn't a high rate ,but when hurbank plc moved to China, that rate would be gone up so much because they have 3 factories in there.Nowadays, there are many companies want to move their factories to China or another developed countries because they have cheap worker price and cheap materials.That is making a difficult problem to developing countries. There are a lots workers lost their jobs and reduce those countries's GDP.
80% of all emplyees is a good rate because it made them control easily.They had high pay of factory floor staff :18000£ pa.3% of labour turnover pa is a low rate. The money which they paid for worker when they closed their factories is too low. There was only 35000£ total. It was almost 2 people pa.
The rate of unemployment in the region of the new factory in china is 14%.It is a low rate in a country has over 1 billion people. The money which they pay for new labour is lower than Cellton's labours 9 times.The costs to relocate and set up is £22 million and net present value of investment is £ 5.7 million, that is a big money.They had to prepare if they wouldn't want to have a problem with their cashflow.
Their sales revenue and net profit was increased with a big number. I think they shouldn't change their factories's location.If they want to have more profit, they can cut some group of products which have low profit and increase produce their strong products.For example they can can cut theit shirt production because It have low sales revenue and high fixed costs: £15000000.

Trucks set to roll on East-West highway

The first 1,500 vehicles of Vietnam, Laos and Thailand have been licensed to run on the East-West Economic Corridor (EWEC), which is expected to boost trade, investment and tourism activities in the relevant countries.

Representatives of the three countries met in the Central Highland resort city of Da Lat on February 25-26 to grant permits to 500 trucks from each country. The permits allow the vehicles to travel on the EWEC, particularly the section linking Vietnam and Laos.

The event will mark Vietnam’s first success in implementing the cross-border land transport facilitation agreement among the six countries of the Greater Mekong Sub-region (GMS), said Nguyen Van Thach, deputy director of the International Cooperation Department under the Ministry of Transport.

The GMS is comprised of Vietnam, China, Thailand, Laos, Cambodia and Myanmar.

The EWEC is an especially important corridor as it will create a channel for commodities coming from Thailand and Laos and going to Vietnam’s ports of Da Nang and Vung Ang, said Mr Thach. From there, the goods will be exported overseas. In addition, Vietnamese commodities will move to Thailand and Laos on the same channel. The EWEC is the shortest way for Thai goods to enter Vietnam and vice versa.

The 1,450km long road links the following points: Mawlamyine-Myawaddy in Myanmar, Mae Sot-Phisanulok-Khon Kaen-Kalasin-Mukdahan in Thailand, Savanakhet-Dansavanh in Laos and Lao Bao-Hue-Dong Ha-Da Nang in Vietnam.

It also intersects several north-south arterial routes: Yangon-Dawei, Chiang Mai-Bangkok, Nong Khai-Bangkok, Road 13 in Laos and Highway 1A in Vietnam.

The corridor aims to strengthen economic cooperation and facilitate trade, investment and development between Laos, Myanmar, Thailand and Vietnam; reduce transport costs and make the movement of goods and passengers more efficient; reduce poverty and support development of rural and border areas; and promote tourism.

Banks open doors wide, but few securities investors entering

Commercial banks have resumed loaning to fund securities investments, but they have not attracted many clients. Securities investors seem to be indifferent.

Banks have been pushing up loans

HDBank has announced a package of VND400bil ($23.5mil)it plans to loan to fund securities investments with securities themselves being the mortgaged assets. The VND400bil is part of a plan on disbursement for consumer credit worth VND900bil ($52.91mil). The lending interest rate is about 1.2% per month on average.

Eximbank is lending to securities investors at the interest rate of 0.833% per month only, equal to the interest rate applied to consumer loans, though funding securities investments is considered risky. Clients can borrow sums not higher than 30% of the securities’ market values.

Besides loaning to fund house and car purchases in installments, Tien Phong Bank also provides loans to fund securities investments at the interest rate of 10.5% per annum. Its clients can also borrow sums equal to 30% of securities’ market values for 12 months. However, borrowers must not have had bad debt at the bank in the previous 12 months.

Unlike previously, when banks hesitated to give loans to securities investors, they are now opening their doors wide to investors. It is because they now have profuse capital and they need to push up loaning.

However, despite the efforts by banks, loans to fund securities investments just account for a small proportion of their total outstanding loans. As the stock market has been falling, investors are hesitant to make investments with loans.

While banks have been pushing up loans, securities companies have also been trying to push up services, like repo service, to attract more investors. However, according to Nguyen Viet Hai, General Director of ACB Securities, though the capital reserved for repo service is profuse, and the repo service fee has been decreasing, it is still difficult to attract clients.

Representatives of Thang Long Securities Company (TSC) also say that the number of clients using repo service has dropped significantly since the beginning of 2009.

Analysts have said that in the current conditions, though the banks’ doors are open wide, clients will remain uninterested in loans as they will be under pressure to pay debts to banks on time while there is no sign that the market is on its way to recovery and stock prices are increasing.

Black market price for the dollar climbs

A single dollar cost as much as VND18,000 on the street on Friday.

The price represented a VND200-300 depreciation against the dollar within a day and a VND350-450 fall since Thursday morning.

Gold shops on Ha Trung and Tran Nhan Tong streets, Ha Noi, bought a single dollar at VND17,750-17,800 and sold at VND17,950-18,000.

The rate at small shops ranged from VND17,600-17,750.

In the non-deliverable-forward, or NDF, market – where investors anticipate the value of currencies – the monthly cost of the dollar was expected to rise to VND18,300 within three months – up VND700 against late last year – and VND19,200 within six months.

The dollar is expected to cost VND19,900 by December.

But the State Bank of Viet Nam reduced the daily inter-bank exchange rate by VND3 to VND16,974 on the mandated market.

Vietcombank’s buying and selling price was the same at VND17,483 and the exchange rates at commercial banks remained at the upper limit of the adjustable peg.

The Vietcombank’s rate at the end of 2008 was VND17,494 compared with VND16,025 the previous year.

Several bankers described the demand for the dollar as normal.

"Purchasing power in the domestic market is not growing and demand from enterprises to pay for imports remains limited," said Asia Commercial Bank deputy general director Nguyen Thanh Toai.

The currency, at its most volatile, had ranged between VND15,825 and VND17,495 throughout last year.

Why the high price?

So why the high price on the street?

Senior economist Le Dang Doanh believes that both business and individuals are seeking safety in the dollar.

Others believe the Government decision, announced last Friday, to issue bonds denominated in the dollar to fund key national projects and help offset the budget deficit has added to the currency’s popularity.

People believe policy makers will allow the depreciation of the domestic currency to make the bonds more attractive.

As PXP Viet Nam Asset Management’s Kevin Snowball explained: "Investors will buy bonds if the foreign currency is stronger because they’ll make money.

"They won’t buy bonds if the foreign currency is weaker because they’ll lose money."

Also gold traders, who sold to take advantage of the high international price for the precious metal, are turning their dong into the dollar because the interest banks now offer for deposits is not as attractive as several months ago.

The likelihood that the interest paid for dong deposits will fall as low inflation in Asia, including Viet Nam, allows the central bank to further reduce the interest rate also promotes the dollar.

In addition, the Harvard Kennedy School of Government and some international banks have advised a further, orderly depreciation of the dong this year to boost exports and narrow the trade deficit.

Then, as Asian stocks slide and insolvent banks face the prospect of public ownership, investors are choosing the safety of the dollar, US Treasury bonds and gold.

And many bankers agree, the Government is unlikely to intervene in the market.

Hot gold

Gold jumped slightly to VND19.67 million (US$1,130) a tael yesterday, up VND20,000 per tael against late Thursday.

The price followed the world price for the precious metal, which had reached $978.20 an ounce – up $4.80 and its highest for more than six months.

A tael equals 1.2 troy ounces.

On the Sai Gon Gold Trading Exchange in Ha Noi, gold cost VND20.47 million ($1,133) per tael.

In Ha Noi, the Phu Nhuan Jewellery Co, PNJ-DAB, the buy-sell price for gold leaf was VND19.58/19.66 million ($1,125-1,129) per tael.

At Bao Tin Minh Chau Jewellery Co (BTMC), gold traded at about VND19.54/19.62 million ($1,122-1,127) per tael while at the Sai Gon Jewellery Holding Co, it was about VND19.60/19.67 million ($1,126-1,130) per tael.

Sellers, who offered not only gold leaf but also gold jewellery, heavily outnumbered buyers in the morning and early afternoon.

Viet Nam Gold Trading Association member Tran Quoc Quynh forecast that domestic gold prices would increase during the next few days because of the international trend upward.

It could plateau at $1,050 per ounce because of the heavy demand in the US, Russia, China, Switzerland and France, he said.

Government units to tackle labour disputes

The Vietnamese government is stepping up efforts to address labour disputes by establishing specialised industrial relations units nationwide.

Last week, the government permitted the establishment of the Industrial Relations Centre, the first of its kind, under the Ministry of Labour, War Invalid and Social Affairs’ (Molisa) managerial umbrella. It will be run with state financial support.

Following the establishment of the Centre, city and province-based sub-centres are to follow, ensuring the Centre’s responsibilities are met and all enterprises nationwide reached.

Nguyen Manh Cuong, a Molisa senior official, who is the founder of the Industrial Relations Centre, said that industrial relations units would act as a third party, playing the role of mediator and helping to settle labour disputes arising between employers and employees.

“The units will also provide technical assistance and training in association with industrial relations if needed. They will forecast and analyse industrial relations, giving the results to government agencies and organisations, as well interested employers,” Cuong said.

The establishment of such units is among the Vietnamese government’s moves toward better resolving labour disputes, a problem that foreign investors have said hindered their business, thereby affecting the nation’s attractiveness for foreign direct investment.

Last year, Prime Minister Nguyen Tan Dung urgently asked governmental agencies and local governments of 63 cities and provinces across the nation to open regular dialogues, enhance labour policies and establish grassroots trade unions in face of rising labour strikes at foreign invested enterprises (FIEs).

Reported figures indicated that labour strikes had risen year on year, from 139 in 2003, to 147 in 2005, to 541 in 2007 and to 649 in eight months of 2008. In total, there were 2,555 strikes in Vietnam between 1995 and August of 2008, of which 72.4 per cent occurred in FIEs. Most strikes were reported in the nation’s industrial hubs of Ho Chi Minh City, Binh Duong and Dong Nai.

Reasons for strikes, many of which were unprompted, include low wages, excessive overtime hours, unpaid social insurance and lack of communication between employers and workers.

Ou Cheng Ming, vice president of the Taiwanese Electrical and Electronic Manufacturers’ Association (TEEMA), a group of 3,800 company members with giants like Foxconn and Compal, said that labour strikes in Vietnam would make Taiwanese investors reluctant to enter the country.

Meanwhile, although Vietnam has been ranked as the third most promising investment destination for Japanese investors in the next three years by the Japan Bank for International Cooperation surveys, labour-related issues like rising labour costs are raising concern about Vietnam’s investment climate.

“I have seen the Vietnamese government actively moving to address our labour problems since the middle of the year, and this is a positive signal for us to look favourably upon Vietnam,” said Ming, who received an investment certificate to build a $35 million electronic part manufacturing plant in the north of Vietnam two weeks ago.

Following the prime ministerial directive on industrial relations last year, Molisa would have to improve labour policies including those governing the payrolls of FIEs to more clearly regulate the wage levels of unskilled and skilled workers.

The Ministry of Planning and Investment would head the organisation of regular talks with foreign investors, especially employers, using Vietnamese workers in industrial and export processing zones to more quickly address the issues.

Concurrently, local governments of cities and provinces across the country must also set up labour - related taskforces.

The decisions to allow deferment of tax payment and reduce value added tax (VAT) on 18 categories of commodities has prompted prices of many goods and services to fall soon after they took effect on February 1.
Many enterprises nationwide have announced prices cuts of 2-6 per cent over the last two days.Eighteen categories of commodities now enjoy a 50 per cent VAT reduction, including wholly-assembled cars and car components, engines, gear boxes, coal, basic chemicals and hotel and tourism services.Hoang Quoc Tuan, deputy director of the Dong Nai Brick and Tile Co, said that thanks to the tax reduction, tile companies would not have to spend time and money on measures to boost sales in a difficult period.
Customers would also benefit as they will not have to spend as much money to buy products, he said. The reduction of VAT from 10 to five per cent has seen the prices of four-hole bricks go down from VND1,100 to VND1,045 each. The price of ceramic tiles has decreased from VND6,800 to VND6,460 each.

Scientists warn of increase in magnetic storms

The number of magnetic storms will steadily increase until 2011 with possible harm to people’s health and damage to electrical systems, warns the Geology and Physics Institute.

There will be 15-20 storms this year with an intensity of 300-400nT (nano-tesla), a unit of magnetic density.

Institute director Dr Ha Duyen Chau says the storms will not severely affect electrical distribution but capacity could be lowered when they occur.

Electricity and oil pipeline managers should monitor information so they can take preventative measures, he says.

Radio waves can also be disrupted.

“Unfortunately we can’t say for sure in which months the storms will occur and although we can predict the possibility of a storm one or two days before it happens, we can only know for sure 30 minutes before it strikes,” he explains.

The past two years have been quiet with just 10 storms per year, Dr Chau says.

The sun’s operative cycle is 11 years. The last peak was in 2001 and the next will be in 2012. At that time, about 40-50 500-600nT storms can be expected.

“We can’t exclude the possibility that it will affect Vietnam’s Vinasat-1,” he says.

“We are powerless against the storms but we can understand them and thus avoid their effects.”

People who suffer from heart disease, high blood pressure and psychological disorders should be aware of the storms and stay at home or travel by car during a magnetic storm.

Dr Chau says that, although magnetic storms do not usually markedly affect Vietnam, it has no concrete statistics about the damage they cause.

The institute has four monitoring stations-Hanoi’s Gia Lam District, Lao Cai Province’s Sapa, Da Lat in the Central Highlands and Bac Lieu in the south. Their tasks include recording the intensity, amplitude, frequency and duration of the storms.

Vietnam started to study magnetic storms in 1957 but the monitoring stations were not installed until after the 500KV national grid was functioning in 1998.

The institute’s statistics show the country had 40 magnetic storms in 2001 and 15 in 2006.

Magnetic or geomagnetic storms are a disturbance of the earth’s magnetic field associated with charged particles generated from solar flares and sunspots.

They usually last from 24 to 48 hours, but some have lasted many days. An electromagnetic storm disrupted power throughout most of Quebec, Canada, in 1989.

Vietnamese boy amazes Polish music circles

5 years old, Vietnamese boy Nguyen Viet Trung followed his sister to her music school. During the break, he curiously toyed with a piano in his sister’s class. Seven years later, the boy is astonishing the Polish music world.

Biuletvn Informacyiny, a reputed music magazine in Poland, writes about Trung as follows: “Nguyen Viet Trung, from Vietnam, is a young piano talent, who feels music by a pure and fresh soul. The talent of this 12-year-old boy can compare to outstanding last-year students of big conservatories of music, though he has been studying music for only six years”.

Twoja Muza, another famous music magazine in Poland, in its issue dated December 2008, called Trung “a Polish music star with clear piano talent. His hands move all hearts. He went on and off the stage, earning constant tremendous applause from the audience after playing an immortal work by Liszt”.

The article listed Trung’s awards: first prize at a piano contest for kids in Poland in 2003, the Golden Musical Note at an international contest in 2006 where contestants only played Mozart works, third prize in an international music contest in 2007, the grand prize for playing Chopin music for foreign children in Poland in February 2008.

In late 2008, Trung won second prize at an international piano contest in Poland. When Trung registered for the contest, the organisers were surprised and they thought Trung mistakenly registered. They couldn’t believe that a 12-year-old boy wanted to participate in a contest in which the youngest contestants were 16-17.

When Trung came out on the stage, the audience and jury were surprised to see the tiny boy who timidly approached the piano. With four difficult music works by J.S. Bach, F. Liszt, F. Chopin and J. Berkowicz, Trung passed three rounds of competition to enter the finals. On the final night, the concerto by W.A. Mozart, F-dur KV 413 played by Trung moved the hearts and the souls of listeners.

When Trung finished his part, the theatre was quiet for a moment, then tremendous applause broke out. The Vietnamese boy had to come back on stage several times to thank the audience.

I met him at a Christmas Eve party in Vietnam. Trung didn’t look like a serious music prodigy, but a mischievous Vietnamese boy.

“My mother anxiously waited for the results but I knew everything was okay,” Trung said about his latest contest.

“What do you mean?

“I went up to the jury area. The chief of the jury shook hands with me. He said nothing but I knew that it was good.”

“Why did you think that it was good?”

“If it was not good, why would he shake my hand?”

Trung was born in Hanoi. Before he could talk, he was sent to Poland because his father did business there. Several years later, his father and brother returned to Vietnam. Trung, his sister and mother stayed in Poland.

Trung came to music by chance. One day the 5-year-old boy followed his sister to the piano club of Professor Filomena Dziedzic. During the break, the curious boy touched a piano. The famous music professor heard the sound made by the boy. She asked him to do again.

Trung’s fingers innocently touched the keys but the soul from the piano astonished the experienced and famous professor. She told Trung’s mother about the boy’s special talent in music. Trung’s parents decided to send the boy to a local music school. Trung easily passed the test to enter this school.

After six years studying music, Trung has become famous in Poland, Hungary, Russia and Ukraine. He has his own album for sale.

“I live in Poland but my idol is Dang Thai Son,” Trung said.

It is expected that in the near future, Vietnam will have a second Dang Thai Son.

Trung will return to Vietnam to perform in a concert by young overseas Vietnamese music talents in Europe and Australia at the Hanoi Opera House on February 22, 2009. The concert, held by the National Vietnam Music Institute, will be conducted by bandmaster Le Phi Phi.

Kangaroo method helps weak babies

Premature babies are now benefiting from a new and effective treatment at the National Obstetrics Hospital. To the delight of parents, the treatment means that babies born too early can develop as normally as babies carried to full term.

A doctor at Hue General Hospital gives special care to a premature infant.

Nguyen Thi Huong (not her real name), in Ninh Binh Province, who has renal failure, just gave birth to her baby after only 30 weeks of pregnancy. She said that she felt really happy knowing that her baby - weighing only 1.2kg - is doing well.

"My family didn’t think that he would be able to carry on because he was too small and weak," she said.

"But thanks to the doctors’ treatment at the hospital, he is now getting on well."

According to hospital director Nguyen Viet Tien, the hospital has invested in new and modern equipment and machines, and has applied new methods to treat premature babies.

"Many premature babies, even those who weigh only 0.7 to 0.8kg, have received proper treatment and are growing normally," said Tien.

Tran Thi Phuc, head of Obstetrics Faculty at the hospital, said that the new method applied at the hospital, called "kangaroo care", had proved effective when used on premature babies, even those born after just six months of pregnancy.

Kangaroo care is a form of skin-to-skin contact between a parent and their baby. The baby, wearing only a diaper, is held in an upright position against the parent’s bare chest. The baby is held this way for 20 minutes to four hours a day. This is called Kangaroo Care because it is similar to the way a baby kangaroo is snuggled against its mother.

The kangaroo care period is as long as a normal pregnancy, about nine months and 10 days.

Doan Thi Lan (not her real name) in Ha Dong District, who has heart disease, gave birth to her first baby at the age of 40, after only 28 weeks of pregnancy. Her son weighed only 0.9kg when he was born. He now weighs 1.4kg.

"His health is quite good now. The kangaroo method makes me feel safe when I can hold him in my arms. It’s really great," said Lan.

Doctor Phuc said that the causes of premature births are many and varied. Mothers too young or too old (14 - 15 years old or above 40 years old), or those with illnesses like heart diseases, high blood pressure and foetal infections may be likely to give birth prematurely.

Nguyen Thanh Ha, head of the Infant Faculty at the hospital, said that premature babies are usually born between the 26th and 36th week of pregnancy. These babies often suffer different kinds of health problems such as digestion difficulties, brain problems and weak senses like vision or hearing.

According to statistics supplied by the Infant Faculty of the hospital in 2008, the total number of babies born at the hospital was 19,618, with 2,507 babies born prematurely, 12.7 per cent of all pregnancies. Of the figure, 88 per cent went on to develop normally.

Primary research:is the gathering of first- hand date that is tailor-made to a firm' s own products, customers or markets.This is carried out by fieldwork, whereas secondary (second-hand) date is gathered by desk research.
Product differentiation:is the extent to which consumers perceive one product as being different from its rivals.A highly differentiated product is one which people think pf as so distinctive that it has no acceptable substitutes.With low differentiation, a product would be one among many,with many direct, acceptable competitors.As a result, products with weak differentiation need to charge relatively low price in order to hold their market share.
There are two main sources of product differentiation:

Actual product advantages, such as better design, better manufacture and higher quality standards
Psychological factors such as branding and advertising.

Product life cycle:the theory that all products follow a similar life course of conception, birth,growth, maturity and decline, although products pass through these stages at different speeds.The modern cigarette was born in 1872 and sales peaked in 1973 (implying a product life cycle of around 200 years), whereas the entire sales life span of Pokemon cards was three years.
Factor affecting the length of a product's life cycle:

Durability:if the item need be bought only once (such as a sandwich toaster) then market saturation can hit demand, as all those who want the item, have it
Fashion: if the item's sales grew because of fashion , it is likely that they will die quite quickly, for the same reason
Technological charge can be very significant in turning the customer away from a product that now seems obsolete.

An important implication of the theory is that as every product will eventually decline and die, it is necessary for firms to carry out continuous new product development programmes.Ideally, new products should be financed from the cash flows generated by mature brands and should be launched before maturity turns to decline. The product life cycle relates to company cash flow in the following way (see also diagram on below):

During the development phase there is substantial negative cash flow from the money spent on research and development (R&D ), market research, product design, and setting up a production line

If birth turns to growth, more cash must be ploughed into expanding factory capacity

Once sales have stabilised, the firm can reap the cash rewards from their success
In the decline phase, brands with a high market share can provide the cash for development of replacement products.(See cash cow.)

Product portfolio:the range of products or brands held by a company that provide it with diversified sources of income.Ideally this portfolio should range over different markets and different stages in the product life cycles.A well -known and very useful way of analysing a firm's product portfolio is through the Boston Matrix.
Qualitative research:is in-depth research into the motivation behind consumer behaviour or attitudes. It is usually conducted by psychologists among small groups people within the target market for the product (these are called group discussions of focus groups). The other main technique used by qualitative research is the depth interview.
The idea behind qualitative research is that when people are asked direct question (as in a questionnaire) they may give answers that make them sound sensible or rational.Yet many purchasing decisions are based on emotion, not logic.Consumers' real thought processes during a relaxed discussion that has no pre-set questions. It can therefore lead wherever the psychologist feels the truth lies.
Pros:

can reveal the motivations behind consumer decisions
as discussion can range freely, it can discover the unexpected (whereas questionnaires can only consist of questions that were known beforehand to be significant)
group discussion can provide ideas about how to solve a marketing problem from the most important people of all: the customers

Cons:

each interview or discussion is expensive, therefore few firms can afford to conduct many; this leads to possible concerns about whether the sample is representative
the unstructured nature of the responses means that the data cannot be quantified

Price discrimination:means charging different prices to different people for what is essen-tially the same product. Price discrimination is a response to the recognition by a firm that different types of people may have different price elasticities of demand for a product.For example, under-16s get half-price entrance to most cinemas and football grounds because the owners know that higher prices will cut demand substantially.In this case, as in all considerations of price discrimination, it is essential that there should be the minimum of crossover between market segmants.In other words, if many adults could get in for half-price, the point of the discrimination would be lost.
Price elasticity:is a measure of the way the demand for a good responds to a change in its price. In order to avoid the problems with absolute numbers, it is always measured in pro-portionate or percentage terms, thus:

Income elasticity: measures the way in which demand changes when consumers' real income change.

There are two main elements in a product's income elasticity:

Is the income elasticity a positive or negative figure? Most goods have positive income elasticity, meaning that people buy more of them when they are better off. The term 'normal goods' is given to these. Products with negative income elasticity include sausages and supermarket own label goods. When consumers feel better off they switch from these cheaper foods to more luxurious ones. For example, if the demand of sausages fell by 2 % in a year when real incomes rose 5 %, the income elasticity of sausages would be -2%/+5%=-0.4. Products with negative income elasticity are known as 'inferior goods'.
What is the degree of elasticity? As with price elasticity, a value of more than 1 indicates an elastic demand, while less than 1 means inelastic demand. Luxury items will tend to be highly income elastic: in other words quite a small drop in the living standards of consumers can lead to a substantial fall in demand for expensive sports cars, perfumes or whiskies. Necessities such as toothpaste and detergents are income elasticity.

Worked example: Market research reveals that following an increase in disposable income of 10%, the demand for aftershave rises by 22 %. What is the income elasticity of demand for aftershave?

Marketing mix:the main variables through which a firm carries out its marketing strategy, often known as the four Ps:

Product (including range of pack sizes and/ or flavours or colours)
Price (long-term pricing strategy and pricing method)
Promotion (branding, advertising, packaging and sales promotion)
place (choosing distribution channels and seeking shop distribution).

Textbooks tend to treat each of the elements of the mix as of equal importance. Few marketing companies would agree. The most important element of the mix is the product, which needs to be designed to meet the requirements of those within the target market.If this process has been achieved successfully (probably through extensive market research) the order three elements of the mix become clear. The price must be suited to the pockets of the target market and to the image of the product. The promotion will be through the media that they watch or read, while the place should be the shops visited by those types of people.
The only one of these elements that is outside the company's control is place, for obtaining shop distribution is a very difficult task in crowded modern market- places. No retailers have spare shelving, so in order for your product to gain distribution,another product will probably have to be removed from the shelves. Needless to say, every manufacturer is fighting hard to keep its distribution as high as possible, so it is never easy to gain or to keep hold of high distribution levels.
Marketing objectives:are the goals the marketing department must achieve in order to help the company achieve its overall objectives. Marketing objectives may include:

Halting a decline in market share
Making a brand's image younger
Boosting the awareness of a brand that has faded from consumers' memories.

Marketing strategy:a medium- to long-term plan for meeting objectives.The word 'strategy' suggests a carefully through-out, integrated plan. It should set out the balance of marketing activity between new and existing products - with carefully costed budgets. The strategy is likely to be fully researched and then implemented through the marketing mix - the four Ps of product, price, place and promotion. Adding value: The process by which firms add to the price consumers are prepared to pay for a product. This may take a very simple form: for example cleaning your car or motorbike before you sell it makes it seem worth more in the eyes of the purchaser. Therefore you have added value. Note that this has no effect on the actual performance of the car or motorbike, so the notion of 'value' is very subjective.

Boston Matrix: a method of analysing the current position of the products within a firm's portfolio, in terms of their market share and growth within their market-place. Devised in America by the Boston Consulting Group, this system of product portfolio analysis is far more sophisticated than the product life cycle.The Boston Matrix points out not only the importance of market share, but also that firms want products that can support each other's development. Product life cycle theory implies that declining brands have no future other than to die, whereas the Boston Matrix shows that an ageing bran can be a cash cow to be milked for the benefit of a rising star or to finance the changes needed to a problem child.

Design mix: how the firm combines three key design elements in order to fit the market gap that has been identified. The three are:

Aesthetic appeal (appeal to the senses )

Function (how well the product works and lasts)

Economic manufacture.

Distribution channels: the stages of ownership that take place as a product moves from the manufacturer to the consumer (see diagram on facing page)

Extension strategy: a medium - to long term plan for lengthening the life cycle of a product or brand . Extensive strategies can be divided into two categories, defensive and offensive.

Defensive: a plan designed to postpone the obsolescence of a product by a year or two, perhaps to keep sales going until a replacement can be launched. Examples include car manufactures 'special editions', which usually offer different paintwork, slightly different equipment and a bouncy name.
Offensive: a plan to revitalise or reposition a product to give it a wholly new, long- term market. Horlicks becoming Instant Horlicks achieved this, as it shifted a bedtime drink to an anytime drink. Even more noteworthy was Johnson and Jonhson's repositioning of its baby powder and baby oil to appeal to women instead of just the babycare market.

Types of extension strategy:

Redesigning or reformulating the product ('New improved!')
Adding an extra feature (Now with...!')
Repositioning its price and image (uasually downmarket)
Changing the packaging and advertising imagery to appeal to a new or additional market sector.

Note that sales promotions or advertising spending alone would not be regarded as extension strategies. They are ways of boosting sales that could work equally well at any stage of the life cycles.

Sixty-four people in northern and central Vietnam have been killed or left missing in flood triggered by torrential rains over the last several days, the National Steering Committee for Flood and Storm Control reported on Nov. 3.

The victims included 18 in the capital city of Hanoi, which had suffered severe flooding believed to be the worst in more than two decades. The death toll in central Ha Tinh Province also hit 17.

Flood and torrential rain swept away 99 houses and damaged more than 100,000 others in addition to inundating more than 241,000 ha of paddy fields and cash crops and over 25,400 ha of fish farms.

As many as 168 km of rural roads have been damaged, stranding inter-communal and inter-district communication, the steering committee said.

While initial figures on flood fatality and economic loss are being updated, the Central Hydro-meteorology Forecast Centre said more rain is expected in the northern and central provinces as a new wave of cool air is approaching the areas.

On the day, Deputy Prime Minister Hoang Trung Hai made an inspection tour of flood-hit Ninh Binh Province where he examined Hoang Long dyke and Lac Khoai dam which are the most vulnerable to flood attack.

Zona and Hepatitis B, which have never reportedly attacked a baby at the same time, were both discovered in a 6-month-old baby in the southern province of Kien Giang by doctors of the HCM City Medicine University last weekend.

Doctor Hoang Van Minh, Chief of the Dermatology and Venereology Examination Ward of the HCM City Medicine University, said it is very rare to see newborn babies with zona. It is even rarer to see babies with both zona and hepatitis B at the same time – in fact, this is the first recorded case.

The American Academy of Dermatology (ADD) has also confirmed that this is the first baby in the world with both zona and hepatitis B at the same time.

According to Minh, the baby was hospitalised with many vesicles on its hands and body. After taking special medicines for seven days, the zona was cured. However, the baby is now being treated for hepatitis B, which is said to take a long time.

Doctor Minh said the baby was infected with zona in the 3^rd month of gestation when its mother caught chicken-box. Normally, zona only breaks out tens of years after the patient is exposed to the virus.

The Bank of Japan cut the un-collateralized overnight call rate from 0.50 percent to 0.30 percent on Friday. It was the first ratecut from the Japanese central bank in seven years. The bank also slashed its domestic economic growth forecast.

The euro bought 1.2759 dollars in late New York trading compared with 1.2967 dollars it bought late Thursday. The pound fell to 1.6143 dollars from 1.6444 dollars.

People in Da Nang will have a fresh opportunity to learn more about the art of tuong (traditional Vietnamese classical drama) at the Nguyen Hien Dinh Theatre this December.

A photo and sculpture workshop titled "Exploring the Art of Tuong" will be held and photos and sculptures made depicting the characteristics of the art.

From December 1 to 15, tuong artists will perform at the theatre and explain the beauty and meaning behind the costume and stage sets.

Four local photographers and six sculpture artists will take photos, make sculptures and design souvenirs.

Their work will then be displayed at an exhibition held between December 17 and 26, during which tuong artists will exchange ideas with other artists, researchers and students.

The photographs and sculptures will then be auctioned off to support local tuong artists.

Noted musicological professor Tran Van Khe will chair a talk on the art of tuong, which will be broadcast live on local television.

Tourists can also join a tuong mask painting class scheduled for between December 17 and 26 at Bach Dang Road, Da Nang city.

Around 1,000 white masks will be sold to tourists, who will be instructed in how to paint them in the tuong style.

The ten most beautiful masks will be selected and auctioned to raise money for underprivileged local children. The money raised from the masks (sold for US$1 each) will also be given to the children.

"We choose December to implement the programme as this is high season for tourism in Hoi An, Hue and Da Nang," said Nguyen Hung, who initiated the programme. "We hope the event can help attract more tourists to Da Nang and help create a 24-hour tourism programme."

He said that after the initial programme he would organise regular tuong programmes for tourists. A festival of traditional Asian dramas will be held in the city sometime next year.

According to Tran Dinh Sanh, director of the Nguyen Hien Dinh theatre, the theatre would invite both professional and amateur artists from other localities to perform during the programme.

Funding for the programme is estimated to be around VND1.2 billion ($71,428).

The art of tuong

Tuong also known as hat boi or traditional theatre, can be classified into tuong chinh - a more academic style, and tuong do - a more comic style often criticising corrupt officialdom. Couplets are sung in rhyme following an ancient storytelling technique, known as noi loi (linking words). The instrumental ensemble is dominated by the two-stringed fiddle and percussion.

The rise and fall of tuong

As an embryonic form of classical Vietnamese theatre, tuong singing was introduced in Viet Nam by Ly Nguyen Cat - a Chinese refugee who resettled permanently in Viet Nam under the reign of King Tran Du Tong (1341-69). After a period of development under the patronage of King Tran, tuong was banished from the court of Dai Viet during the reign of King Le Thanh Tong (1460-97).

This policy remained during the Trinh period (16th and 17th centuries), and as such a talented member of a northern tuong family known as Dao Duy Tu (1572-1634) moved south to Phu Xuan (Hue) with the purpose of introducing this art to the enthusiastic Nguyen court.

The art underwent significant development under the Nguyen kings. Its development was significantly reinforced during the reign of Minh Mang (1820-41) who set up a special agency to deal with artistic matters.

During this period, several high-ranking mandarins and members of the royal family set up their own tuong troupes.

Tuong reached its peak under King Tu Duc (1847-83), who generously patron-ised performers and decided to construct two dedicated royal theatres.

The creative development of tuong during this period mainly came from poets, playwrights, stage directors and especially, theorist Dao Tan (1845-1907) who is considered the "founding father" of this art, penning more than 40 plays.

During the French colonial period in the face of growing competition from cai luong (reformed opera) as well as the impact from Westernised trends, tuong singing was performed less and began to wane.

With the establishment of the National Tuong Theatre in 1959, tuong was promoted by the government as important intangible heritage and taught at the Ha Noi College of Theatre and Cinema as part of the institution’s traditional theatre programme.

Since the 1950s, many of the older texts and performance techniques have been modified in order to correspond more closely with socialist ideology and a large number of new plays have been written, mainly focusing on the struggle for national independence and reunification.

However, domestic businesses will also face an increasing number of difficulties and challenges as foreign groups will be permitted to establish wholly foreign-invested companies, increase their investments and open new branches and outlets in Vietnam.

With this in mind, Vietnam’s ministries, localities and enterprises have spent a lot of time discussing a range of measures to improve the competitiveness of domestic businesses and to prepare legal foundations for the licensing of retail and wholesale establishments as well as strategies to develop local distribution systems.

According to the MoIT, Vietnam’s retail market has developed rapidly over recent years with total revenue reaching 44 billion USD in 2007, a 25 percent increase against the previous year. In the first ten months of this year, this figure stood at 782 trillion VND (46 billion USD), up 30.7 percent compared with the same period last year.

Vietnam now has around 400 supermarkets, 60 trade centres and close to 2,000 convenience stores. By 2010, the country expects to see the number of supermarkets to increase by 62.5 percent and trade centres to increase by 150 percent.

GDP growth rate must reach over 6%: expert

Dr. Tran Du Lich, head of the Ho Chi Minh City Economics Institute, said that Vietnam needs to obtain the GDP growth rate of over 6%, even if high inflation or deflation occurs.

While experts are now talking a great deal about the high inflation, you have warned against the risk of deflation at the ongoing National Assembly session. Why?

Dr. Tran Du Lich, head of the Ho Chi Minh City Economics Institute

I think that pursuing policies on curbing inflation and stabilizing the macro economy is the right move for now. We are going to raise the prices of some commodities, such as electricity, which will affect the consumer price index. In general, we must keep wary over the high inflation.

However, you may well know that there exists uncertainties the world’s financial market. Experts have expressed their worries that the problems of the financial market will affect the commodity market, thus causing the global economy crisis.

In case the global economy has a minus growth rate, Vietnam’s exports will face a lot of difficulties. If so, Vietnam will have to focus on stimulating demand and expanding credit instead of curbing inflation.

I think that we should prepare for that situation, and we should not focus only on fighting inflation.

What will happen to our GDP growth rate, if deflation occurs?

My viewpoint is that even when deflation occurs, we need to obtain an economic growth rate of over 6%. In order to do that, we need to expand the domestic market, stimulate the demand, stimulate investments, loosen the monetary policies, and reduce interest rates.

The most important goal for us is to obtain the high economic growth rate of over 6%, even if the high inflation or deflation occurs. This is the figure we need to reach in order to ensure that serious social problems do not occur.

What will happen if the inflation rate exceeds 15%?

I don’t think the inflation rate would be higher than 15%.

You can see two extremes of the markets in 2008. The commodity market is hot with the prices of food, foodstuff, and metal are skyrocketing, while the financial market is cold. However, the heat has reduced while the coldness has become stronger, which should be seen as the signal of a recession.

Therefore, I lean towards the idea about the preparation for the world’s economic recession rather than a new price fever.

Which GDP growth rate project do you think is more feasible, 7% or 6.5-7%?

I advocate the 6.5-7% project, which was suggested by the National Assembly’s Economics Committee as a ‘soft’ figure. We need to consider the current negative situation to set a suitable economic growth rate.

Let’s come back to the targeted GDP growth rate. While the Government has lowered the GDP growth rate, will localities still preserve their previously set targets? Do you think that there are problems in the management?

I myself have suggested that HCM City should not adjust its targeted economic growth rate.

The country needs to adjust the targeted economic growth rate in order to serve the macroeconomic balancing. Meanwhile, of localities that obtain high economic growth rates, such as 7.8% or 10%, this would not in any way influence the national economy.

Financial crisis knocks on door of tourism industry

It is now the high tourism season, but there are not many foreign tourists coming to Vietnam at this moment. The number of businessmen at big hotels in HCM City has also decreased. The world’s financial crisis has knocked on the door of the tourism industry.

Number of tourists down by 30%

According to the Vietnam National Tourism Administration (VNAT), 315,000 foreign tourists came to Vietnam in September, a decrease of nearly 50,000 tourists compared to September last year. While the number of tourists from China, Russia and Germany increased slightly, the numbers of tourists from the US, France, Japan and South Korea have seen considerable decreases.

According to the Deputy Minister of Culture, Sports and Tourism Tran Chien Thang, the ASEAN Tourist Forum (ATF) 2009 will take place from January 5-12, 2009 in Hanoi. This is the first time Vietnam will host the annual regional forum.

Thang said that the ATF 2009 will focus on improving service quality and improve administrative procedures in order to create the best conditions for inner-ASEAN tourism. In the immediate time, when far markets like Europe and North America have decreased, ASEAN tourism should pay attention to medium-size markets like Japan, Australia and South Korea, and especially, to ASEAN tourism with reasonable prices.

The official number of tourists in October has not been revealed yet, but the director of a travel firm said that the number might see a decrease of 30%. Five-star hotels in HCM City and Hanoi say that the number of clients staying at the hotels is smaller than during the same period of last year, though it is now the high season for western tourists to come to Vietnam on their winter vacation.

The director of a travel firm that specialises in serving MICE tourists complained that the number of clients has decreased by 50%. He said that in previous years, it was very difficult to book hotel rooms, but now travel firms can easily negotiate room rates.

Local planning and investment departments in HCM City, Binh Duong and Dong Nai provinces have also confirmed that the number of foreign investors coming to learn about investment procedures has decreased. The staff responsible for providing information at the Vietnam-Singapore Industrial Zone Management Board said that if the board previously received some 10 investors, it was now receiving only 3-4 investors.

An official from the Foreign Investment Agency under the Ministry of Planning and Investment said that it is not a surprise to see the number of investors decrease in the current difficult conditions.

Explaining the reason that brought hundreds of Italian businessmen to Vietnam in the last few days, Marco Saladini, Italian trade commissioner in Vietnam, said that Vietnam is really an attractive market for Italian investors as it imports several billion dollars worth of equipment and production tools per year. Banks exploiting loophole

Banks have been forced to get creative to survive in an increasingly turbulent market

According to a Bank for Investment and Development of Vietnam (BIDV) source, almost all banks are currently “cooking” documents on deposits to enjoy lower reserve requirements. Since early 2008, the State Bank has lifted the reserve requirement 1 per cent higher to further tighten monetary policies in the fight against inflation. Accordingly, reserve requirement for deposits with terms under 12 months was 11 per cent, while 12 months and above was 5 per cent.

The reserve requirement is a proportion of deposits that banks are not allowed to lend designed to protect the banking system. An 11 per cent reserve requirement means lenders must give the central bank $11 for each $100 mobilised. “Most of local banks are seeking ways to convert on paper under 12-month deposits into 12 months and above funds to minimise reserve requirement. This fact forced us to do the same otherwise we would have to bear higher costs,” said the BIDV official.

At the moment, the State Bank is managing local banks’ reserve requirements under nominal deposit terms which means that local lenders “pay” the State Bank reserve requirement according to depositing document between bank and depositors.

Local banks have asked customers to undersigned 12-month and above term deposits for three-month deposits. After three months, the depositors withdraw their money and this withdrawal is considered as a premature withdrawal before the due date. The customer still enjoys three-month deposit interest rate, while the bank reduces the reserve requirement for this deposit to just 5 per cent from 11 as it should be.

A State Bank Monetary Policy Department official said this “trick” has been applied for a long time but became more popular this year as the State Bank applied more tighter monetary policies. “We know [the trend] but to control this malpractice is not easy and it requires much enforcement from the State Bank inspection department in terms of human resources. Additionally, putting this under control is possible once the banking system reaches certain modernisation,” said the State Bank official.

Financial experts expressed concern the trend could lead to data inaccuracy which commercial banks submit monthly to the State Bank especially on deposit terms. “This is a serious matter that should be controlled as accurate data is vital for appropriate monetary policy making,” warned a financial expert.

Some financial experts have suggested that in the short term, the State Bank could apply a common level of reserve requirement for both deposit categories, somewhere between 11 and 5 per cent.

Taking a cyclo tour in Hanoi capital city

After wandering around Dong Xuan and Hanoi markets, I took a walk to the ancient town and reached Hang Duong. I was really impressed with the cyclos (xich lo) leisurely carrying travelers through the bustling streets. The red colored cyclos are striking in the crowds as they busily take care of their customers.

Without hesitation I decided to experience a cyclo tour. It is fascinating to ride a cyclo tour around the old streets, taking in ancient relics and the development of Hanoi capital city.

With no planned route we left behind the crowded areas and soon came to the spacious streets of Hang Chieu, Hang Buom and Hang Giay. The fragrance of a special kind of flower on Quang Trung Street was delightful, as was the panoramic view of Hoan Kiem Lake.

The Cyclo has existed in Hanoi for a long time. At first it was a rickshaw, introduced by the Japanese in 1868 and imported to Vietnam in 1983 to serve the rich. It returned as a cyclo from France to Hanoi in 1939 and became a popular means of transport in the romantic and peaceful city.

Mt. Fansipan up 12 places in new world wonders vote

Lao Cai Province is preparing for a Fansipan climbing competition to open in Sa Pa town on Nov. 14.

According to the Director of the Culture, Sports and Tourism department of the northern mountainous Lao Cai Province Tran Huu Son, the advancement was attributed to a campaign launched by the province from early October to the end of December.

Shelter from the storm: A small bay where fishermen seek shelter for their boats during rough weather.

The islands, which are spread across 15sq.km of ocean, can only be accessed by boat. However, visitors have a few different options when choosing their seafaring vessel: the wooden boat travels there in about an hour and a half, the speed boat gets visitors there in 25 minutes or the public boat, which shuttles residents of the Cham islands to Hoi An and back once a day. Visitors usually do not take the public boat, though the one-way ticket costs only VND10,000 per person.

Before arriving on Hon Lao Island, the largest and only populated island among the island group, the boat will stop at Bai Xep beach to offer visitors a chance to see the white coral reef through the boat’s glass-floor. But nothing can compare to the real experience of swimming in the clear water over the reef, which is only one metre below the water’s surface – almost close enough to touch. So don’t hesitate to jump off the boat into the blue water and enjoy.

The richness of different coral species and other marine creatures has brought the Cham islands to be included in the World Biosphere Reserve. At present, there are 135 species of coral, including six species first recognised in Viet Nam, and nearly 950 other marine species living in the seabed of the archipelago, including many endangered species on the Viet Nam Red Book list.

Fishing is the main occupation of almost 3,000 local people living on the Cham islands. However, in order to protect the archipelago’s eco-environment, the Quang Nam provincial authority has encouraged islanders to fish further offshore. While visiting the island, tourists will have a chance to taste many different kinds of seafood, some of which are unique to the area, such as lobster, oc vu nang (a kind of conical-shape snail), diep (a type of shellfish) and abalone. Another local speciality is cua da – a kind of crab which lives in small mountain caves. The flesh of the small purple crab tastes like butter.

Another natural resource that brings money to local islanders is the harvest of swallow’s nests. Every year, islanders harvest from 1-1.4 tonnes of the bird’s nests, which cost around US$4,000 per kilo. Yen Island is home to the swallows, but visitors are not allowed to set foot on the island. Instead they can visit the temple worshipping the ancestor in charge of bird nest exploitation on Hon Lao Island.

There are many other spots worth seeing on Hon Lao Island. A tour guide will show visitors a small bay where local fishing boats go for shelter during storms or other natural disasters. The bay was built right after the historical typhoon in 1989, which extensively damaged fishermens’ property.

The ancient Hai Tang Pagoda, built in 1758, is another must-see spot. The 250-year-old pagoda is unique because it is dedicated to the worship of three different religions: Buddhism, Taoism and Confucianism. While sipping a cup of herbal tea offered by an elder Buddhist woman, visitors can experience the calm of the scenery as well as of their own spirit.

Walking through the Bai Huong fishing village, visitors can learn about local life by watching local fishermen mend fishing nets and drying fish and squid, or they can go fishing themselves on a tour held on a local fishing boat. Visitors can also buy seafood at a reasonable price for a meal on Bai Chong Beach.

At Bai Chong Beach, arguably the most beautiful beach on the island, visitors should enjoy the island with all five senses: listening to the sound of the wind in the leaves and the waves crashing on the shore, breathing in the salty smell of the air, capturing the scenery with their eyes, touching the smooth white sand and tasting the island’s specialities.

"There is nothing that can compare to the tranquil feeling of closing my eyes and hearing only the sound of waves," said Hai Tri, a visitor from HCM City.

Tourists can sun bathe on the quiet white sand or take a nap on hammocks swaying in the thick shadow of trees.

Bai Chong Beach is also an ideal place for beach volleyball and other water sports such as jet skis, kayaking and water skiing.

A warning for swimmers: sometimes stinging jellyfish can be found floating off the coast.

Those who want to spend the night on the island can pitch a tent right on the beach and enjoy sleeping under the stars.

Cu Lao Cham offer visitors a chance to discover nature’s beauty and escape from the stress of modern life.
